Komodo

We were tapped by nightlife impresario David Grutman to design Komodo, his first restaurant in Miami’s lively Brickell neighborhood. Inspired by the Komodo dragon native to islands in Southeast Asia, we designed the space with the goal of creating a lush tropical garden oasis. Upon entering the multi-level dining room, guests will have the option to dine in several different settings. With the indoor/outdoor lines strategically blurred, the garden elements flow seamlessly throughout the space. Komodo’s signature design highlights five exterior floating bird’s nest pods designed by internationally renowned specialists Dedon with the birds nests replicate the dragon’s first sign of light. The Southeast Asian inspired birds nests give a private elevated dining experience and create a playful tree-house feel. The dining and lounge pods are perched above the exterior garden and ascend around the restaurant.

Outdoor materials such as teak are used in the interior spaces to continue the theme. To incorporate native elements, an oolitic stonewall (a fossilized stone popular throughout Miami) was designed to create a warm perimeter around the garden. Interior highlights include 40-ft. ceilings draped in red, alongside oversized bamboo and illuminated metals that create intimate and private spaces within the dining room. Whether guests are seated in or out, Komodo’s design will be warm and welcoming, stimulating the senses.
